The awakening of the inner center begins by considering your hips as a bridge
what connects your upper body and lower body at the center of your body’s
movement. But…is it just all about that hips?
Well, the hips are not alone in the big business of connecting landscapes like an
upper or lower body. For getting us as a full body in this major balance, it’s last
not least the psoas major muscle, – one of the two muscles that makes up the
iliopsoas, further one of the most hidden muscles in our body, and thus the one
who is the essential helper in all this bridging and balancing situation.
Psoas major originates on the right and left in the lower part of the spine and
runs through the lower abdomen as well as the pelvis, finally ends at the upper
end of the thighbone.
While Psoas is doing his job, he is the one who is also connected to what we
call breathing. Some stuff for that guy who is a natural lonesome warrior, is he
the only muscle in the human body, connecting the upper to the lower body.
To put it plain easy and simply: this muscle is the core of activity in our body.
All starts with his structure, which is diagonal. This thus supports in main the inner organs of our lower body. Than, the Psoas and the diaphragm (what is the most important respiratory muscle) are working together like a hydraulic-
system. This system massages our internal organs and ensures flow and even distribution of our body-fluids.
Apart from a healthy and well-functioning hydraulic-system, it’s the good componences, what makes a system well working. One is a healthy psoas, acting like a wirerope between the lower and upper body, and responding to any movement of the spine. And not just that he serves like a stabilizator for the spine, with the help of the trunk this keeps all vital organs in the lower abdomen. Doesn’t that sound great?
Now, imagine, this system for what reason ever not well working……..
Can you also imagine, that with a dysfunction there are serious consequences which flow throughout the body?
Let’s see why this could really be! While our modern allday-life went fast-moving….
We are (nowadays) living in a more or less constant stress-related release of adrenaline.
And because psoas is the major muscle, who is able to set our legs in motion, itś adrenalin, what gives at least the needed push to do so. What, if this is a constant push, or let’s be saying release….
A constant adrenaline release provokes an as well persistently working psoas muscle. This in turn causes a persistently triggering of the psoas muscle, – means, our body is constantly in „racing or fighting mode“.
If we live in a constant “danger” situation, for example through more or less constant anxiety-states, the muscle reacts to the accompanying chemical reactions of the body (the adrenaline and dopamine release). He is tense.
– And yes, tension also has its price! Because the psoas is directly involved in the instinctive reactions of standing, running, running and „freezing“, – his chronic tension also causes his nervous connections to give the body the signal „a dangerous situation for the body“.
And this isn’t all. Because with it an overdoing Psoas really can cause a large number of different painful symptoms, which we all more or less knowing. Unpleasant things like backpain, discproblems, sciatica, or even worse. Also scoliosis, hip degeneration, knee deseases and desasters, digestive problems, and most shattering depression, the guy can put us in, just because he is persistently and thus overdoing working.
A vicious circle: cause this now will result an overuse of the adrenaline indurations and therefore also an exhaustion of the immune system.
Hope is still alive: By freeing Psoas from a permanent tension, your mind and body get flooded with renewed energy and vigor. A well functioning psoas muscle creates a neutral pelvic alignment, stabilizes the hips, supports the lower spine and abdomen, supports the organs in the pelvic and abdominal cavity and gives you by well functioning a greater mobility and core strength.
Maintaining a healthy psoas means to reduce unnecessary tension and stress, this includes a conscious choice to develop mindfulness also for the body. To understand what it means „standing with its both legs on the ground“, this type of grounding is, what supports our conscious tensioning and relaxing as the to experience lasting interaction of being connected physically in mental and emotonal influences.
Standing with its both feet on the ground, and experiencing a great balancing work by focussing attention to what it means this balancing work, and aligning a bit more to get a grounded and well posture…yes, doesn’t sound so bad. But how many of us doing this tiny procedure continuosly, daily … And more, – is it all already done just by this? Surely not.
Allowing the psoas to hold again without carrying is the first step towards liberating change. It is not the muscles that should provide for the stability of the body but the skeleton. A well functioning and healthy psoas is achieved by a combination of restoring the natural center of gravity, what can be called balance and learning to listen inside the body. Imagine the spine as bundled electrical wires that are constantly receiving and transmitting energy – in this image, the psoas is grounding.
A relaxed and mobile psoas grounds, it connects to the ground on which we stand.
In a figurative sense, we could say or define, that the psoas, as a muscle with its strength, helps us to go through life with more “backbones”. An upright posture and a firm footing results in a well working and healthy psoas muscle, – and surely vice versa.
